The Turned Wood Designs Difference - We Build It Better!
premium hardwoods + precision milling + intriguing patterns + fine woodworking finishes + secure hanging system + hardwood edge wrap
When you commission a Turned Wood Design piece of art, it kicks off a process that begins with selecting the just-right pieces of premium hardwood for the job, expertly milling them in our shop with precision, and assembling each piece with care before it is hand finished.
The Turned Wood Designs Difference
Difference #1: Solid Hardwood Blocks
We get the hardwood for our geometric wall art and hanging & wall mounted headboards from a local outfit that specializes in wood - that's all they do. Which is great for me and you - it's the only place we source our wood and each project begins with a trip to select the raw hardwood lumber that will go through a metamorphosis before it becomes your bespoke, made-to-order, piece of art.
You Choose the Hardwood
While we can consistently source our standard hardwoods of Cherry, Maple, Oak and Walnut; we can occasionally source imported and domestic hard and soft woods such as: Aromatic Cedar, Bubinga, Cypress, Hickory, Jatoba, Jelutong, Mahogany, Paduak, Panga Panga, Purpleheart, Teak, Wenge and Zebrawood. All non-standard woods are priced per order.
Difference #2: Intriguing Patterns
Sometimes it's nice to find that exact piece of art and decor that just works and you know it from the moment you see it - sometimes you yearn for something that is just a little different than what you're seeing. We give you the option of both paths here at Turned Wood Designs. Explore the nuances of each pattern below and contact us if you have questions or need additional help making selections.
You Choose the Pattern - Explore Our Standard Patterns
Geometric
Pattern creating both strong horizontal and vertical lines. The undulating pattern creates unending visual interest.
Spiral
Turning at each corner, the grain patterns take on new meaning as blocks along each side run in the same direction
Wave
The rotating block creates a wave that is engaging and unique from each viewing angle
Weave
Similar to a basket weave pattern, this newly created pattern at Turned Wood Designs was created in conjunction with a recently commissioned piece of Wall Art that spelled out a word. The strong horizontal lines and subtle pattern are particularly well suited to spell out a word - check out our latest offering!
Still looking for something completely unique? We'll work together through an iterative process to review your bespoke pattern - first a digital proof, then actual layout is approved via photographs before it is cemented in place.
Throughout the website you'll find examples of the pattens in our different hardwoods. Let us know if you're not seeing exactly what you're looking for and we'll make it happen.
Difference #3: Precision Milling = Minimized Gaps
We start with large pieces of lumber that are expertly milled into "sticks". These sticks are as square as we can make them and consistent across hardwood types to ensure that assembled blocks - regardless of species or when it was milled - come together with the highest fit and finish. This means that our precision milling results in minimized gaps in our finished art.
We take pictures along the way and if you're interested in seeing how your Wall Art or Hanging Headboard is coming along, please let us know during the check-out process.
Difference #4: Hand Rubbed Woodworking Finishes
Our finishes aim to let the natural wood hues, grain patterns and layout be the focus - no paint or airbrushing here. We assemble and finish each TWD piece of art by hand with only the best, most natural woodworking finishes available.
Watson's Danish Oil is our standard, and preferred, finish but as with the hardwood selection and block pattern, we can create a custom finish as needed.
Difference #5: Innovative Hanging System
Nothing's worse than struggling to hang something, so we make it easy to hang with our innovative hanging system that uses a very strong French cleat. Once the mounting cleat is affixed to the wall (level and in studs), our Wall Art or Hanging Headboard is supported across the full width. We also affix matching hardwood trim to complete the art and to hide the mounting cleats.
French cleats are known for their strength (way more than your art) and for the ease of hanging. Simply hang the provided wall mounting cleat in your desired location - be sure that it's level and screwed into studs. Now simply place your Turned Wood Designs art onto the cleat - the art mounted cleat comes pre-attached.
Each unique piece is crafted with attention to detail, ensuring the highest level of fit and finish. Let us know if there’s a particular wood or look that you're trying to achieve by letting us know.
